I was hosting a private group of talented photographers on AWHC's Fish Springs land. We had little luck locating the horses in their usual places. After several attempts, we finally decided to make one more pass by the watering hole. And there they were, as if they had simply appeared out of nowhere. The entire herd was there, enjoying a warm spring morning and a fresh cool pond.\u003cspan aria-hidden=\"true\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen, something extraordinary began to unfold.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI noticed a mare with a large belly, repeatedly swishing her tail, which had begun to extend straight out behind her. My heart began to race. Could it really be happening, right here, right before us all? I shared with the photographers that I had been doing this work for 20 years and had never witnessed this, in the wild, before, and just how lucky they were. In about 40 minutes, there wasn't a dry eye amongst us. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWithin moments, the mare began lying down and getting back to her feet, again and again. We watched in quiet anticipation as the morning now took on an entirely different meaning. One of patience and trust. And then, there he was. A new life entered the world in the most beautiful and natural way, surrounded by his family and the vastness of the landscape he would come to know as home.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have photographed countless tiny foals over the years, but this was one special moment in the wild. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, he hasn't even stood yet. Literally moments old in a wild new world. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere was something almost impossible to put into words about being present for that moment. The wonder of it all, the tenderness between mother and newborn, her fierce protection and the quiet magic of watching him find his footing.
