Freedom originates from the 300,000 acres of rugged desert that comprise the Hart Mountain Refuge in Southeastern Oregon, once home to 270 wild horses. These horses descended from ranch stock, Spanish mustangs, draft horses, and cavalry remount horses. In 1998, the United States Fish & Wildlife Service removed all the horses from the refuge, claiming that they competed with the pronghorn antelope, for which they sold hunting permits. Because these horses were rounded up on horseback, Return To Freedom was able to relocate family bands intact to the sanctuary. Freedom, a stunning lilac roan stallion, was a young foal when he arrived at the Return to Freedom sanctuary. Today, he has a band of his own and provides exceptional leadership to his herd.
